KAMPALA. More than a decade after helping KCCA to the league title Brian Umony is set to make a return to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. Daily Monitor understands that Umony will be the headline transfer when Express unveil their midseason signings at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium this morning.
The six-time league champions finished the first round in seventh position and Umony is seen as a player who can spur them to greater heights with the club having averaged just over a goal scoring 17 in 15 league games. Umony also a 2008 league top scorer has been unattached since ending a short stint with Indian side Gokulam Kerala last July where he scored eight times in 15 games.
His arrival is expected to mean the departure of lead striker Tony Odur who scored four goals in the first round. Odur is reportedly pursuing a deal abroad while there has also been a reported disagreement between the club and the talented Eric Kambala.
Umony has at various points over the past two seasons been training with former side KCCA since recovering from a broken leg suffered in February 2016 while playing a league game at Ethiopian side St George. He then underwent knee surgery a year later to fix a long-standing knee problem with the injuries denying him a chance of featuring for the Cranes as they returned to Afcon after a 39-year absence.
He scored in the 2-0 victory over Botswana at Namboole in 2015 as the Cranes opened their 2017 Afcon qualification. His last international game came in the Cranes’ 1-0 away win against Comoros on September 5, 2015. Head coach Kefa Kisala said any deals will be made public today.
