Celebrated events security expert Dixon Adol Okello commonly known as ‘James Bond’ will lead a team of six Ugandans who are going to serve in different capacities at the Total Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt 2019.
As the eyes of the football world turn to Cairo International Stadium for the opening game between hosts Egypt and Zimbabwe, Okello will be the man ensuring that the environment under which the game is played is secure and safe enough.
He is one of six senior safety and security officers that African football governing body, Caf, is deploying at the six venues that will host the tournament that runs from June 22 to July 19.
The trust that Caf has in Okello is manifested by the fact that he will be handling Cairo International Stadium which will be the main venue, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well as all Uganda’s games.
The other senior safety and security officers are Al Moustapha Mamane (Alexandria Stadium), Rachid Medjiba (30th June Stadium), Patrick Beckles (Al Salam Stadium), Sam Chmayse (Suez Stadium) and Najib Berbar (Ismailia Stadium).
This is Okello’s first assignment by Caf at Afcon. But he was also in Gabon as Head of Security for the Ugandan delegation at the 2017 edition.
Recently he has landed many Caf assignments for both Confederation Cup and Champions League games as well as qualifiers.
He has also got gigs from Fifa including the recent Fifa Under 20 World Cup. He first surfaced on the football security scene at the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa although it remains unclear how he ended up there.
The other Ugandans on official Caf duty include Assistant Referee Mark Ssonko, who is one of the match officials and is the only Ugandan on that list. Fufa president Moses Magogo is on the organising committee of the tournament by virtue of being a Caf Executive Member.
Fufa CEO Edgar Watson is a member of the Tournament Technical Study Group, Leila Nankya, who is the federation’s Events Manager, will serve as protocol officer while veteran sports journalist Andrew Jackson Oryada is deployed as a Media Officer.
