MASAKA.

Former Cranes midfielder Hakim Magumba has urged people of Masaka to support the Masaza Cup. The tournament kicked off yesterday. Magumba, who participated in a friendly game organized on Thursday between Buddu County and Friends of Big Talent FC at Masaka recreation ground, said the tournament is vital in uniting Buganda Kingdom. The tournament is blessed by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi. In the friendly game, Magumba, who officially retired from competitive football last year, featured for the Big Talent side and propelled them to a 2-all draw.

“I last played here (recreation ground) when I was still a new midfielder in SC Villa. Masaka United used to give us difficult time here,” Magumba noted. “But today, I am here to remind all of you to support the Masaza Cup,” he added.
Magumba reasoned that the Masaza Cup is one of the tournaments that unearths talented players, who later feature for the national senior team, the Cranes.

Musician Edrisa Musuuza, commonly known as Eddy Kenzo, played for the Big Talent team and donated two sets of jerseys and track suits to Buddu.

The musician, whose love for soccer is well documented, hails from Buddu and wished the team good luck in the Masaza Cup. “It is Masaka that has made me go far. That’s why I promise to contribute for my county every year. Buddu will again make it to the final,” Kenzo said while handing over the sports kit to Meddy Sserwadda, the Buddu team manager. Buddu were humiliated 5-0 by Singo in last year’s final.

Some of the prominent players that featured in the Thursday friendly game include Vincent Kayizi (Express), Emmanuel Kalyowa (Lweza), Steven Bengo (Nakumati FC-Kenya), Ibrahim Kiyemba (Lweza), Paddy Muwumuza (Lweza)and Denis Kaggwa (The Saints).
