State Research Bureau reigns supreme at maiden film fest

The first edition of the Uganda film Festival wrapped up on Friday at the Kampala Serena Hotel helipad gardens, with overwhelming numbers of Ugandan film producers, actors and fans. The closing event of the weeklong festival climaxed with an awards giving ceremony.

One of four judges who selected the best of Ugandan films was South African actress Rosie Motene of the Generations series fame.

The award for Film of the Year, Best Screenplay and Best Uganda Feature Film, went to State Research Bureau, a Matt Bish production that delves into Ugandan’s tumultuous history, set during the 1980s liberation war. This is Love featuring comedian Ann Kansime took the best short film accolade while Imitate by Cross Road Films took the animation accolade. The best student film, Bloody Sunset was selected for the inspirational story portrayed by a schoolgirl and the hardships she faces.

There were no specific winners for the categories of best sound and best cinematography where nominees made a tie and were all awarded certificates of recognition.

Last King of Scotland actor, Abbey Mukiibi received a special recognition. The ceremony, organised by the Uganda Communications Commission, was graced by the ICT Minister Nyombi Thembo.

There were several performances to spice up the event that included a saxophone performance by Herbert Brook, plus cultural performances by Kika Troupe and contemporary music performances by gospel artiste Judith Babirye and newcomer Khalifa Aganaga.
