Its low ground clearance annoys on uneven roads

What you need to know:

  • Michael Tukei loves his Audi A3 for various reasons, including its powerful engine and the fact that its spare parts are easily available. However, he says one has to take extra care while driving on uneven roads or avoid them altogether.

The Audi A3 is a compact car with all the perks of life if technology, sporty look, and a powerful engine is what fascinates you.
Michael Tukei is a proud owner of the 2006 model, a five door hatchback powered by a turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine. Bought in July 2019 at Shs28m, Tukei loves this front drive car because it has the perfect combination of performance, comfort, handling and good fuel economy.
“Although compact, it has a powerful engine producing up to 200bhp of power, which can do some hauling if the need arose. It is also silent and stable on the road, giving you a drama-free ride,” he shares.
Downside
The A3 is also longer than its two-door predecessors, which may be a disadvantage, especially when it comes to driving in the busy Kampala City centre and parking. Nonetheless, Tukei has no trouble parking his prized machine. “Due to its low ground clearance, the only hurdle I face is difficulty driving offroad or on potholed roads,” he says.
Perks
Looking at what one can expect when behind the wheel, Tukei says the A3 feels sporty, agile, handles twists and turns really well and the interior is well insulated from road noise. “With a low centre of gravity, it is  as though you are driving a luxurious go-Kart.”
Audi’s attention to detail and one of its strengths, is giving you luxury in every ride. So, its interiors were not a thing to be left to chance. Tukei is indeed thrilled by the amazing interior that is complete with comfortable seating, and a six-CD audio system, among others. “Once inside, all the details make the small looking car seem much bigger,” he adds.
He also loves the split folding rear seat that increases seating space. However, when there is no need for seating space, it allows for carriage space that is a bit lacking.
More to that, getting large cargo into and out of it is eased by the large boot opening and side access through the back doors.
Spare parts
Tukei, on a normal drive to Central Business District will part with Shs100,000 for 180-200 kilometres, while the same will help him cover 250km when driving on a highway. “That is roughly a week, which is good with me.”
In regards to spare parts, Tukei has only done his purchases online. “The parts I have had to replace were bought online because all the parts I came across were second hand, which I did not like. That said, the cost depends on the part.”
He is, however, quick to add that most spare parts for the A3 are available in the local market at affordable prices since it shares most of them with a Golf of the same year.
Tukei adds that he services his car once a year or after 8,000km. This, he says, consists of changing oil, oil filters and air filters, which usually cost about Shs300,000.
