Court says it will entertain the politician’s bail application on Wednesday next week, despite pleas from his lawyers.

KAMPALA

The Magistrates Court at Mwanga II Road yesterday denied former Rubaga North parliamentary aspirant Moses Kasibante bail and sent him back to Luzira Maximum Security Prison on remand for another week.

Mr Kasibante was remanded to prison last week after he was arrested for skipping bail on three cases he is battling at the same court in relation to the opposition led walk-to-work protests from April 2011.

Grade One Magistrate Suzan Abinyo ruled that court will entertain Mr Kasibante’s bail application on Wednesday next week, despite pleas from his lawyers Erias Lukwago, the Lord Mayor of Kampala City and Mr Asuman Basalirwa.

Accusations
In issuing her ruling, Magistrate Abinyo said Mr Kasibante had failed to show up in court to answer to earlier bail conditions, with none of his lawyers or sureties showing up to explain his absence.

She said she was surprised to discover that Mr Kasibante had found time to attend “other people’s” court sessions while curiously forgetting his, a matter that had prompted court to issue warrants for his arrest.

Mr Kasibante, who was dressed in a grey suit, wore a gloomy face and occasionally placed his hands on his chin. Police picked up Mr Kasibante last week from the Kampala High Court where he had gone to attend the on-going trial of suspects of the 2009 Kayunga Buganda Kingdom riots.

A former journalist, Mr Kasibante has got three case files at the same court and is facing charges of inciting violence, promoting sectarianism and malicious damage to property.

The walk protests were organised by Activists for Change, a pressure group advocating for change of governance. The protests were against the escalating cost of living. They were characterised by police brutality and arrests.
