KCCA shuts down Arirang restaurant over poor hygiene

KAMPALA.
Arirang restaurant in Nakasero, Kampala, was on Friday closed and its manager fined for operating an unsuitable kitchen and selling “unfit” food for consumption.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) said they received a complaint that the quality of foodstuff served at the restaurant was wanting.
“We found the kitchen wanting. It was very filthy and unhygienic to prepare food for consumption,” said Mr Peter Kaujju, the KCCA spokesman.
“We have taken the restaurant manager, whose names I will provide later, to City Hall Magistrate’s Court to be charged,” Kaujju said by telephone on Friday.
Although the restaurant premises remain open, no customer was at the place when Sunday Monitor arrived at the venue.
Mr Kaujju said the manager was sentenced to three months in prison or pay a fine of Shs6m.
“We are not stopping at checking Arirang restaurant. Other eateries must do self-inspection before we act. We are intensifying our operations as we have done in the past to ensure the public receives the best value for money, as well as safety for their health,” he said.
However, Ms Yang Jing Li, a manager at the restaurant, denied KCCA’s allegations. She claimed someone was targeting their business.

Tuskys Supermarket in Bwaise, one of the food stores shut down by KCCA last year, remains closed to-date.
