Mugumya in bad shape, says envoy

Parliament- Up to 300 Ugandans, including Mr Sam Mugumya, the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party activist, are currently languishing in Democratic Republic of Congo prisons, MPs heard yesterday. They are held on rebel-related charges, illegal entry and drug trafficking.
Uganda’s Ambassador to DR Congo James Kinobe yesterday told journalists after a meeting with the House’s Public Accounts Committee members that out of the 300 Ugandans held in DRC, at least 120 are linked to rebel activities of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group opposed to President Museveni’s government.
“Most of these Ugandans are connected to rebel-related activities, including ADF. Others were on drug trafficking and illegal entry. Most of these people have not been brought to courts of law for trial,” Ambassador Kinobe said.
He added: “We have visited several prisons and talked to the authorities in DRC to ensure they get justice. We have also connected the prisoners to their relatives.”
Ambassador Kinobe said he had visited Mr Mugumya and that he is in bad shape. He said Mr Mugumya is sick and is being held at Ndoro Military prison.
The ambassador said Mr Mugumya entered DRC using pseudo names (William Mukiza and William Mukiga) and he denied being linked to ADF rebels after his arrest although he allegedly admitted he wanted to wage a war against President Museveni’s government.
