Mukono gets boost to fight coronavirus as cases surge

Mukono district health officials receiving equipment to boost their Covid-19 fight

As the ministry of health continues to report an exponential increase in Covid-19 cases and community infections, Ugandans have been advised to observe the SOPs.

As part of efforts to fight the virus spread that has so far infected 51,006 Ugandans following 1,247 new cases confirmed in 24 hours, Mukono District has been boosted with equipment to contain the virus.

Being part of the districts with high cases, Mukono health officials received free equipment to help in reaching out to communities to fight the virus that has claimed 374 Ugandans since March last year when the outbreak was first confirmed in the country.

Ms Imamura Mariko, a representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Uganda said they had boosted the district Covid-19 taskforce with Shs72million, 150 bicycles, two motorcycles, 150 kits, computers, bags, registration books, smart phones and others to support community engagement strategy.

"Since 2003, JICA has given a lot of support to ministry of health by improving facilities of Regional Referral hospitals, General hospitals and health centers," She said on Tuesday.

She said the support is intended to contain the spread of COVID 19 in the communities and very timely now that Uganda is going through a second wave of the virus.

The district health officer, Dr Steven Mulindwa said he was concerned that most of the people in Mukono are not compliant when it comes to observing SOPs and risk getting infected.

He said Mukono has registered 556 positive cases including 33 health workers since March last year. Eight of the victims, including one health worker succumbed to the virus.
