Obore wins MUST guild presidency

President Museveni has pledged to work with all Ugandans irrespective of how they voted in the last elections.

What you need to know:

Close call. The victor beat seven others in a tightly contested race.

MBARARA. Charles Obore was on Friday elected Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) guild president 2016/2017 defeating seven other contenders.
He defeated his closest rival, Mr Collins Atuhaire, by seven votes.
The second year Bachelor of Science in Education (Chemistry and Biology) student polled 632 votes while Mr Atuhaire got 625 votes.

Mr Obore, who will be sworn in on April 29, promised to work with his rivals. “I will make sure that I engage all the contestants I had in this race because they also have ideas I believe can help in uplifting Mbarara University,” Mr Obore said.
The race attracted eight candidates, among them a lady, Rebecca Abber, who was nick-named Maureen Kyalya, the only woman in the February presidential election. The university does not allow candidates to be affiliated to political parties but students associated Mr Obore with FDC while Mr Atuhaire was tagged as an NRM candidate.

Each of the candidates was given a name or tag associated with either of the eight presidential candidates.
Mr Atuhaire claimed there was rigging and indicated that he will petition the authorities to cancel the election and conduct fresh ones. The six others conceded defeat.
Mr Okello, who came in the seventh position, said: “Here people choose you simply because they believe you can work for them. But I think it’s high time the university allowed multi-party politics here so that we can nurture leaders following multi-party dispensation in the country. These elections I believe have been free and fair though there were some challenges.”
