Police destroy waragi worth Shs70 million

Napak. Police in Napak District in Karamoja sub-region have destroyed 13,000 litres of illicit gin (waragi) worth Shs70 million.
The waragi was impounded in various trading centres in an operation launched by the district security team.
The Resident District Commissioner, Mr Naman Ojwe, said waragi has claimed the lives of many people in the district.
Speaking on Monday before the destruction of the impounded waragi in Kangole Chini in Napak District, Mr Ojwe advised waragi dealers to engage in other businesses.
He called upon locals to work hand-in-hand with the authorities to rid the district of illicit gin.
“We have saved many people from dying due to excessive consumption of alcohol in the district,” he said.
Napak District police commander David Agaba said since the beginning of this year, police have destroyed waragi worth Shs200 million.
Mr Richard Aruk Maruk, the Mt Moroto region police commander, said waragi was the root cause of rampant domestic violence in the region.
“Couples are fighting day and night after taking this alcohol and many men are no longer productive because of this waragi,” he said.
