Is Tourism ministry promoting obesity?

As Uganda is struggling to achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I was intrigued by the Tourism ministry’s addition of curvy and sexy women to the list of tourist attraction in the country.

Local institutions and actors have a role to play towards achieving SDGs. A particular goal of concern is the promotion of good health.

Non- communicable diseases (NCDs) also known as lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases if not managed will affect the achievement of this particular SDG.

NCDs are associated with obesity and it is hard to separate a curvy and sexy woman from obesity regardless of whether she is overweight or morbidly obese.

This will be illustrated in the suggested Miss Curvy pageant. Many girls will tend to think that it is okay to be overweight. But isn’t this a major setback in the fight against NCDs.

According to WHO report of 2016 on Uganda, the probability of premature death due to NCDs has been on the decline from 24 per cent in 2000 to 20 per cent by 2016.

This means that for every 100 overweight (curvy sexy) woman, 20 were likely to die prematurely from an NCD where one of the major risk factor is obesity.
