Several netball clubs have started on-field preparations for what will be a fresh league season.
In a club managers and chairpersons’ meeting with the new Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) executive in Kampala last week, it was proposed that the league throws off on September 15.
“The current league had issues. Some teams played without licence and to avoid future petitions and misunderstandings, we decided to start afresh,” said Yahaya Ssengabi, publicity secretary of UNF.
However, the decision did not go without opposition from some teams, with claims that they had spent a lot to prepare for the league games quashed.
Ssengabi promised that the federation would look into the issue.
The meeting also discussed ways to better the netball league, with televising the games, vaccination and Covid-19 tests for players and officials among the key areas of focus alongside the tetchy issue of branding and sponsorships.
It was resolved that umpires distance themselves from coaching and that coaches also stay away from the handling the whistle.
Clubs train
Among the clubs that started training in earnest include league champions NIC, who have taken to daily afternoon sessions at Makerere University court.
“We want to defend our trophy so we’ve to be ready. We started training and the team is in good condition,” said Ali Mugisha, NIC assistant coach.
Highly ambititous debutants Makindye Weyonje have camped at Buddo Secondary School under coach Jesse Asiimwe in a bid to follow the Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures, while Police are expected to start preparation today at Kibuli Police Station court.
