A review of the ML W163

The ML was Mercedes Benz’s Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) designed to take over from the G wagon Cross country.

The ML was Mercedes Benz’s Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) designed to take over from the G wagon Cross country as a more popular on and ‘a bit of’ off road vehicle. It was the first SUV to feature safety innovations such as the Electronic Stability Programme and Electronic Traction System (ESP).
The ML has three generations the W163, W164 and W166. Each one of these generations has won accolades for achieving design objectives and repositioning the brand to stay on the podium with the best car products in the world. The ML W163 is quite popular in Uganda on the used and brand new car markets.

Performance
In performance terms, the 1998-2004 ML W163 2.7 litre common rail turbo diesel engine seems to offer a better bargain because the turbo charger gives it a punchy response and better fuel efficiency and is cheaper to run when compared to the 3.2 litre V6 Petrol.
The 3.2 litre however gives a smoother quieter ride and is easier or more affordable to look after when it ages. Performance petrol heads will love the 5.4 litre V8 ML55 AMG whose thrilling and exciting performance is unrivalled. The 3.2 litre has a better resale value.

Handling and control
The handling and control of the ML 163 is not suited for high speed performance driving because this vehicle tends to experience a little body roll when driven fast through corners because of its high profile.
However, the ESP and Traction counter the effects to keep the ML driveable. At speeds of 140KPH and below, you will drive comfortably on the highway. You have a push button selectable low range for the difficult or slippery muddy roads after it rains.

Exterior
The 163 ML looks chic with sturdy looking curves which sit well on the medium off roader. The 2002-04 ML 163’s facelift comes with the improved curved front bumper whose fog lamp inserts give a new character to the 163.

Interior
The 163 interior is spacious and comfortable and the driver has a clear view with a high command driving position. Instrumentation, switches and electronic knobs are all within easy reach and convenient to use.
After sales and maintenance is superb as there is a ready availability of spare parts, at a reasonable cost, both with the main Mercedes dealer and the independents.
