Aga Khan High's Gourd of Wisdom

The Aga Khan High School has joined the list of many schools that have opened their productions to the public at theatres. On July 2-3., the school will stage Gourd of Wisdom at Theatre La Bonita. The play revolves around Lara, a king's concubine, who will do anything to have her son, Prince Zuma, become next king, much to the consternation of many in the kingdom. She is driven to do the almost impossible task of stealing a gourd of wisdom by a witchdoctor.

The plot revolves around her desperate effort to do this and its effects on the community. Music from South Africa where the inspiration for the play comes from is used.

The actors are dressed in symbolic traditional kingship clothes; they use drums, spears and shields portraying a vivid picture of an African kingdom. Indian, Rwandan and local traditional dances have been employed. The students were enthusiastic during the rehearsals at La Bonita.

Gourd of Wisdom was written and directed by Tony Ssali and Andrew Nsubuga. “We looked at the current political situation; things like greed for power, hypocrisy and betrayal of trust,” said Ssali of the inspiration behind the play.

With the crisis in Libya and big people like the former mayor of Kampala being pushed out of a house, the play is timely. Gates to the show will open at 2pm and 6pm with tickets going for Shs15, 000 (students) and Shs20, 000 (adults). Tickets can also be got from the school.
