What you need to know:

  • People make snap judgments about us based on our appearance, especially when it comes to what we are wearing. But what we wear has meaning beyond what others see; it also affects the way we perceive ourselves.

In style. If you love fashion, chances are you have occasionally done things that raised a few eyebrows. Certainly, looking the way you do comes at a price only you know too well. Here are a few, struggles only you can understand writes Hassan Ssentongo.

Uncomfortable: Only women who wear jumpsuits know that it is not roses and gold. It is all fun and fashionable until you have to use the restrooms. In most cases, you literally have to take the whole thing off and put it back on.

1.Painful: Wearing those trending vinyl boots that leave everyone wondering if they are actually comfortable. Truth is, they are not. But, you cannot let it show.

2.Money: Spending a huge chunk of your paycheck on a pair of shoes or bag because it is a ‘designer piece’. They say that a ‘Birkin bag’ can literally heal a broken heart!

3.My clothes my life: Even when you are stuck with lots of clothes you barely wear; you do not want to give away even a single one of them. Your friends are only allowed to borrow and return without fail.

4.More trouble: Yes, you know exactly what you want to wear. You even have a whole array of clothes to choose from. But, here you are stuck and unsure of what to wear. Asking your partner to help you make a choice does not help at all as all he says is “Honey, you look great in both dresses.”

5.Even more trouble: Your closet is full of beautiful clothes. But you still have to buy a new dress to wear to a party for your friend’s son because she has seen you wearing everything you own, and you do not want to disappoint! You end up buying a new dress every time there is something to go to.

6.That top you do not wear: There is a top, jacket or pair of shoes you spent a lot of money on but barely wear, simply because you ran into someone wearing something that looked it.

7.Wedding mystery: As you organise your wedding, you keep the designer of your bridal gown plus glam squad (hair and makeup stylists) top secret. Not even your matron knows who they are until the D-day.

8.No way: So you are rocking this outfit that everyone seems to love. Everything is fine until someone asks where you bought the outfit. That is a secret you surely do not want to reveal because you do not want everyone looking like you do. “Aahh.. I do not remember, I will check the tag when I get home,” you lie.

Why it is important to stay fashionable
People make snap judgments about us based on our appearance, especially when it comes to what we are wearing. But what we wear has meaning beyond what others see; it also affects the way we perceive ourselves.
If you are looking for a promotion, wear clothes that make you feel strong. The right outfit may even enhance creativity, focus, and negotiation skills. Related research highlights how getting dressed up promotes abstract thinking and provides perspective.

Yes, a power suit can be literally empowering. This may be particularly helpful when things aren’t going your way or you have a tough day ahead. When you look your best, it’s easier to see the big picture and not take criticism too personally.
The right outfit can help you feel more confident when you need it most—it can serve as both armor and inspiration. Studies have found that people say they feel friendlier and more competent in business attire than in T-shirts and jeans. Of course, it depends on the work that needs to be done and on personal preferences. Whatever you do, choose clothes that bring out the best in you, that elevate you, and that make you feel strong and beautiful.
