Ways to boost your earnings through use of social media

What you need to know:

  • Finances: Although it is important to improve money management skills, one must also plan to increase one’s earnings in order to live comfortably.
  • Esther Oluka explores ways to harness social media and earn from it.

A number of people today, both young and old, have social media accounts. While some individuals are using their accounts for posting comments and pictures, others are maximising the opportunity to make money. We explore the different ways you too can earn money from social media.

Sell your work
Maximise social media for advertising your work. For example, you could open up a Facebook page exclusively for your business. Highlight the kind of service (s) you offer, your location, phone number and if you can, post a few pictures showing some of your work.

From time to time, post something on the page as a way of continuously reminding your clients about the business. On the other hand, if you have a special natural ability, talent or passion, talk about it in your posts. For instance, if you are an artist, continuously update your Facebook page by posting your art pieces. This is how you will get clients.

Get help from those with many followers
Do you have a friend who has more than 1,000 followers on twitter on even one with up to 3,000 Facebook friends? Here is the catch. Request them to post or say something about your business. Trust me, even one mention can have a big impact on your business.

Start up an online diary or blog
Another way of effortlessly making money is by starting a blog; a regularly updated website. Concentrate on continuously writing about something you are passionate about. In a July 2017 article titled, Blogging-what is it and why is it popular, The Home Business magazine ran an online article stating that blogging provides an easy way to keep clients up-to-date on what is happening including providing new deals and tips as well as generating income from options such as advertising and affiliate products.

Use it as an avenue to get rid of clutter
Are there particular household items you no longer need, for example shoes or clothes? Rather than simply throwing them away, you can put them on sale via social media and at least recover a decent part of their cash value in the process.
For a long time, Lynette Ann Birungi pondered how best to get rid of the 20 pairs of open shoes she had acquired over the years.

“I tried to sell them to a shoedealer in town but all was in vain. He offered me very little for them,” Birungi says, adding, “He was asking for Shs5,000 per pair after reasoning that the shoes were old. I refused because the shoes were still in good condition.” It was then that one of her friends sold her the idea of using social media to sell the shoes.

“I took pictures of the different pairs and posted them on social media. I attached a sale price of Shs10,000 to each of the shoes,” Birungi says. All the shoes were bought within a week. If you are also thinking of getting rid of any household items, you can follow Birungi’s example.

Give insightful debates
If you are the type of person who is never comfortable either mentioning your business or posting personal pictures on social media, you do not have to remain inactive.
There is an alternative. You can decide to generate insightful discussions for instance on trending topics. If the topical issue is on child marriages, you can decide to write an in depth informative piece on this issue and thereafter post it online.
You never know the kind of people who will come across such an article. Someone might appreciate your work to the extent of hiring you as a consultant.
