How I keep fit Angella Katatumba: Artiste, managing director, Hotel Diplomat

Angella Katatumba

I have always been a big girl, right from my teenage years. I used to weigh about 100 kilogrammes. Often times, I got easy access to all sorts of food stuff such as ice cream, cake milkshakes, burgers and chocolate.

These played a big role towards my weight gain. However, I started losing weight after my eight-year old marriage ended. I had married when I was 21 years old, just as I was about to complete my Master’s Degree in at Oxford Brookes University, England.

For about three weeks, I ate nothing but ice cream and ended up losing 38 kilogrammes.
When I got back to Uganda in 2004, my life started getting back on track and I started gaining weight again. In some way, the environment here forced me to change my eating habits. Since I could not get the tasty burgers and fries like those back in England, I resorted to eating local boiled food.

Long walks
I also started taking long walks with my father, to and from work every day.
Another thing I did was to reduce the food portions I ate. As a result, my stomach has shrunk. To keep up with my healthy eating habits, for breakfast, I take a lot of fruits and vegetables. I do not eat meat at home, but I do so at the social functions where I am normally invited. I have now bought a tread mill. I run on it for about 45 minutes every four times in a week. I use it especially in the morning hours. I also have a cross trainer, another stationary exercise machine that I use for walking and running.
