Former Makerere University Economics lecturer, Bernard Tayebwa Mugisha is seeking financial support to get a kidney transplant in India.

Tayebwa, 53, was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease in addition to diabetes mellitus and hypertension. He has suffered from diabetes and hypertension for about 15 years until he developed kidney failure recently.

The father of five is currently admitted at Mulago hospital in ward 6B, under in-patient number 8002, where he is receiving dialysis under the care of nephrologists.

“His kidney function has deteriorated to the extent of needing bi-weekly kidney replacement therapy in form of dialysis to sustain his life,” reads a recommendation letter from Mulago hospital, given to Tayebwa to seek financial support.

According to Dr Gyaviira Makanga, a nephrologist at Mulago, Tayebwa’s kidney transplant surgery in India is expected to cost $30,000 (Shs108m).

However, Dr Makanga added that for a successful kidney transplant, the patient will need a suitable and willing donor, who will be extensively evaluated by the doctors. Medical tests for both the patient and the donor cost about Shs2m. Tayebwa also needs about Shs160,000 for dialysis and Shs150,000 for drugs every week as he waits to get the required money for surgery.

“He needs financial support to live a better life with a new kidney. All forms of assistance will be most appreciated,” says Dr Makanga.

“Tayebwa’s family, well-wishers and friends have put in place an organising committee to fundraise and coordinate the activities towards his treatment estimated to cost Shs120m both at Mulago hospital and in India,” says Sam Rugaba, the fundraising committee chairman.
