Local government authorities in Karuma town have said the sudden population explosion in Karuma town council, has posed a sanitation threat in the area.
Speaking during a free medical camp for t Karuma residents last weekend, Charles Amooti Ntairehori the Kiryandongo district LCV chairperson said the town council has faced a challenge of proper garbage disposal because the population has more than doubled and Karuma Town council had not anticipated it.
“When people heard about the dam being constructed, very many came and settled here and the numbers have grown from 15,000 residents to 30,000 and we are now facing a challenge of sanitation in the area,” he said.

He added that because of the expanded population, the town council is experiencing more demand for social services which had not been planned for urging the Sino Hydro Power Corporation to assist the Town Council to fix some of them such as schools and roads that are required desperately.
According to Chu Maoming the deputy head of the Chinese Embassy, this was a sign of commitment to improve the livelihood of the communities where they operate.

“We have integrated corporate social responsibilities in our operation and strategic planning and to date, we have made donations of school supplies and learning materials to Karuma Primary School,” he said adding that other activities include drilling boreholes and renovating several access roads for the adjoining villages and provided road accident rescue.
