I am bothered by pimples

Doctor, I am a 22-year-old woman in my fourth month of pregnancy. I am bothered by pimples which have recently developed yet I never used to have them. What can I do to get rid of them?

Acne or pimples occur when skin oil glands; especially on the face, chest, shoulders, and back get blocked and swell leading to cosmetic, more than a serious condition. Occurring on the face during pregnancy when a woman already has cosmetic issues regarding her changing body image, can really be stressful requiring a quick solution.
Unfortunately, many drugs used for acne in a non-pregnant woman can lead to birth defects. Thus need to consult with a qualified doctor before using medications including skin creams and lotions.
Though any woman, especially adolescents can get acne, with older women getting a reprieve, acne can appear for the first time or return during pregnancy. In pregnancy, hormone increases are said to be responsible for acne that usually start during the first three months of pregnancy and disappear after delivery when the hormones have returned to their lower normal levels.
So, since the acne only pauses a cosmetic nuisance, one can wait untill after delivery for it to go but should still be mindful of taking a balanced diet while reducing on foods that worsen acne such as refined sugars, fizzy drinks; sodas, pizza, chocolate, greasy and fried foods, and junk food. Also, oil based cosmetic products such as hair gels, conditioners and make ups should be avoided. Washing gently with a mild soap at least twice a day can also help. It is important not to squeeze pimples to avoid scarring.
