Health benefits of coconut oil

Coconut oil serves various purposes. From culinary, medicinal and cosmetic purposes and for good reasons. Coconut contains antibacterial and antifungal properties.

In order to enjoy the various health benefits, Fausta Akech a nutritionist at Healthy U recommends that you use organic, virgin coconut oil, not the refined one. It can be added to your coffee or tea, mixed with your yogurt and butter.

Coconut oil contains antimicrobial lipids, and some acids which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Coconut oil can also help improve bacteria and gut health by destroying bad bacteria and candida.

“This therefore boosts your immunity. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which deals with viruses and bacteria that cause diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. Coconut oil helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and helicobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa,” says Akech.

Coconut oil improves digestion by helping the body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins, calcium, and magnesium. According to Akech, the saturated fats present in the oil have antimicrobial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, and parasites that can cause indigestion.

This therefore prevents various stomach and digestion-related problems.
