Are there moments you feel like taking your mind off things, from the stress of work, personal or even family problems?
Those times you feel like sitting quietly and paying close attention to your own thoughts. Well, it is possible to attain such a feeling through a process known as meditation.
Dr Irene Apio, a psychiatrist at Butabika National Referral Hospital, says meditation is a practice that involves soul searching and reflection on one’s life in order to construct a better plan for their future.

“It allows one think about their past mistakes and to focus on how to make remedies in order to achieve future goals,” says Dr Apio.
In addition, she says the meditation process is usually best done when one is completely sited by themselves, surrounded by a silent environment so that the individual is forced to listen to their own thoughts. As regards to what kinds of environments are suitable for doing meditation, Dr Apio lists them as churches, parks, hospitals as well as graveyards.

“Such places are usually quiet and enable one to internalise their thoughts with limited interference,” she says.
