Feel the difference that comes with high ceiling

What you need to know:

  • Low ceilings have dominated in the construction industry.
  • However, the high ceiling is catching up with a number of homes and apartments using this type of ceiling. But this means the developer needs enough space for one to view the beauty and serenity of a high ceiling.

A high ceiling is greatly affected by the oration of the walls during the construction process. According to Joseph Oryang, an engineer at Century Investors Limited, the size of the house has to be big enough for one to have this kind of ceiling as the wall plate of a high ceiling is higher than that of a low ceiling and the same happens when it comes to the roof frame.
However, building a high ceiling comes with extra costs. “If you are planning on building a high ceiling, you need to know that there are technicalities involved thus the need to hire a professional who knows how to build such a ceiling without compromising the beauty and strength of the structure,” he says.

Height
Vincent Kato, an engineer at Sawa Construction company in Kyengera, says having a great ceiling needs one to prepare thoroughly because it requires a number of materials to avoid cracks and this is achieved by investing heavily in it for a quality standard.
“One can play around with change of ceiling height range from 10 by 10ft, 12 by 12ft, 19 by 19ft and also differ in terms of cost. However the mostly preferred height is the 10 by 10ft.”

Considerations
A high ceiling is good when done with proper intents for one to feel the comfort and beauty it holds, however, leaving it hanging without any designs is no work done, Rite Mukasa, an interior designer in Kiyembe says. “When it comes to lighting, simple and small illuminations do not suit high ceilings as they fade away.” Large hanging chandeliers give it a classical look matched with large windows.

Why a high ceiling
“A high ceiling reduces the risk of fires that usually breakout due to short-circuits and it minimises chances of fire propagating to other areas in the entire house. Therefore, a high ceiling gives room for fire fighter avert such calamities,” says Oryang.
In a dusty environment, a high ceiling will contain dust and prevent it from circulating to other places in the house. This is because it conceals off the roof and the rooms and keeps them dust free.
A high ceiling is also a temperature moderator. It always absorbs heat and it is for that reason that houses with high ceilings are always warm even when the weather conditions a chilly. For those with extended families this kind of ceiling is good as it provides enough space, doing away with congestion in the house
High ceiling has a certain short comings that may arise from materials used. If not positioned well, it can turn out to be hazardous to the people especially when the tunnel to the ceiling is not placed in the secure position, it can turn out to be a hide out for thieves.

Free thinking

In 2007, another study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, revealed that the height of ceilings affects how people think.
Marketing experts Joan Meyers-Levy and Rui Zhu modified the height of ceilings in rooms to study how participants responded.
They discovered that high ceilings seem to cause people to think more freely, encouraging creativity and abstraction, while lower ceilings promoted confined thinking.
For example, one experiment placed volunteers in a room with a high 10ft (3 metre) ceiling, while asking them to solve anagrams.
They were able to complete work puzzles for ‘liberated’ and ‘unlimited’ faster than those in a room with a lower eight ft (2.4 metre) ceiling.
However, when the words related to feelings of entrapment, like ‘restricted’, the findings were reversed and those in the more confined space out performed those in the room with the higher ceiling.
