You want your baby’s nursery to be functional, but you also want it to be warm, inviting and nice to look at. When it comes to decorating, streamline your design by including fewer pieces you adore.
Clare Kemigisha of Smart House Interior designers says parents should not hesitate to consult an interior designer who will be on hand to advise on what to choose for which gender, furniture, colours and playing toys.
“Knowing the gender of your baby will be the starting point,” kemigisha says.
Christine Atuhaire, a mother of four, says all the required items such as diapers, wipes, changing table covers, laundry hamper, your diaper disposal system, burp cloths and others should be within reach.
“The last thing you want to do is step away from the baby and risk him rolling off because you need to grab something clean to slide under his butt before he poops,” she says.
You will be carrying a baby back and forth in the middle of the night and a misplaced chair (or playmat, toy, or book, ) can hazardous.
“Make sure you have lots of functional storage space so you have easy places to tuck things when you are done using them, instead of leaving them scattered on the floor,” Kemigisha advises
Make sure the lighting in your nursery can mimic nighttime anytime. That means a heavy enough curtain or window shade (some people recommend blackout shades) to fake the dark when it is time for a nap during the day.
“Most babies will think that the light means it is time to stay awake and will strain even if they want to dose off. Finding a way to bring darkness will trick the baby into thinking it is time to sleep,” Kemigisa advises.
Pick a theme
Since you are choosing for your baby, find a theme and decorate the nursery based on that. Allen Matovu, a mother of one, says she got the theme for her baby’s nursery while at the beach. She picked some seashells and these gave her the ocean theme she put in her boy’s room.
Use gifts from loved ones
Kemigisa says incorporating items that have been received from family members into the décor can add even more warmth and love into the space.
