Gabon superstar Aubameyang, Dortmund should end marriage

Skills showman. After scoring 25 goals in 31 appearances in 2015/16 and 31 in 32 last season, Aubameyang has continued to light up the Bundesliga with 13 strikes in 15 games this term. But his deteriorating relationship with Dortmund could end his stay. AFP Photo

What you need to know:

  • WENGER ON AUBAMEYANG “Yes, a character can be very positive or very negative. Overall you look at achievement over career and if he has done well the character has been used in a positive way. He is that good.”

By all standards, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is having a good season at Borussia Dortmund, at least going by the numbers.
The Gabon striker, 28, has scored 13 goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances. In a season of turmoil for the Rhur club, Aubameyang’s goals are more than a blessing.
However, the former St Etienne forward is among those ‘pulling’ the club down besides the defence that’s in ruins.
His relationship and stay with the eight-time league champions has become untenable.

Irreconcilable differences
Dortmund and Aubameyang are two parties in need of separation just like all those Hollywood marriages with the famous ‘irreconcilable differences’ line.
“Yesterday (last Saturday), after the team training, the team had a joint meal and afterwards an important team briefing. We held very intense talks with him (Aubameyang) today and ultimately suspended him,” sporting director Michael Zorc said.

This is the third time in two years that Aubameyang is in trouble. In November, he was booted with Zorc revealing that punctuality problems had led to the action.
German publication Bild reported that the striker had repeatedly been late for training, including turning up 20 minutes late for final preparations ahead of the trip to Stuttgart.

Barrage of suspensions
The striker was also suspended in November 2016 when he missed a 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in the Uefa Champions League for an unapproved trip to AC Milan against then-coach Thomas Tuchel’s wishes.
When you pick on that Hollywood line, you know the end if this is nigh. Zorc claimed not to know what’s going on in Aubameyang’s mind.
Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki described Aubameyang’s behaviour as ‘idiotic’. Luckily for the club, it’s January and they can ship this ‘idiot’.

If these issues came up in October, Dortmund would have their hands tied. The player has done well in his time in Germany, including shattering the African scoring record.
Nonetheless, Aubameyang has hit the ceiling and can do no more good for this team. The quicker Dortmund realise this the better.

Arsenal have been linked to him. Believe that at your own peril even if the reports of Dortmund trying to sign Michy Batshuayi from Chelsea should paint the picture.
Aubameyang still commands a transfer fee in excess of $60m which could be the shot in the arm Dortmund need badly to sign those who want to be here.
This is crazy money for a 28-year-old who has a history of indiscipline. Sell him!

Bayern stuck
Bayern Munich’s hierarchy are stepping up their bid to convince interim coach Jupp Heynckes to extend his stay at the club beyond the summer.
Heynckes took over until the end of the campaign following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in September, with the upturn in form he has achieved leading to calls for his stint to be extended.

However, Heynckes, 72, has previously ruled out an extension beyond June, despite his close friend and president Uli Hoeness’ best efforts to persuade him to stay on.
Please stay until those Giovanni Trappatoni years…
