Kampala. How often do you sit in the midst of army men and enjoy their company? Try keeping the company of Chief of Land Forces, Brigadier Leopold Kyanda as we did when he invited Seals Swim Club for lunch at Kabira Country Resort last Sunday. The aptly named brigadier, if you remember your poems from literature class and a certain Leopold Sedar Senghor, Senegal’s founding father, was celebrating his daughter’s spectacular performance at the May15-17 Kenya Junior Swimming Championships.

Hannah Kyanda won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal as she led Seals to a second placed finish at the meet that attracted 27 clubs from all over East Africa. He worked the lighter side of everyone in attendance as he explained his experiences with his daughter, who he revealed puts the swimming pool beyond anything else. His inspirational and prosaic talk, interjected with cheeky and light commentary from nine-year-old Hannah left parents, coaches, media and swimmers glorified and satisfied of their roles in the development of the aquatic sport. Salute for you Brig. Kyanda!
