Segawa refutes Mayweather links

It has been two weeks since Sulaiman Segawa (9-0) showcased his dominance in the Mayweather Promotions (MP) backyard with a shocking victory over Brain Gallegos in a Super Featherweight - six rounds - contest at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, Las Vegas.
Segawa improved his record to nine fights and victories with that win over Gallegos whom he dominated throughout the entire fight. Judges Kermit Bayless and Tim Cheatham (58-56) ruled in favour of the Ugandan while Robert Hoyle (56-58) ruled in favour of Gallegos before a split decision victory was announced in favour of Segawa.
Late in the second round of the fight, Segawa had turned into a menace raining a barrage of punches on Gallegos to the delight of a small section of Ugandan fans, including Sharif ‘The Lion’ Bogere, who is under the MP stable.
Blood is indeed thicker than water. Bogere, alongside the other Ugandans in the arena, couldn’t hold back as the moans, yells and excitement grew louder and more hopeful with every passing round.
The crowd’s previously ‘impossible dream’ of defeating a pugilist from the famed Mayweather stable was not only percolating in the stands now but also in the mind of the boxer.
“I am promoted by Mayweather but I had to support my brother. I grew up with Segawa,” said Bogere.
Throughout the fight, Bogere could be heard shouting instructions to Segawa in local dialect – Luganda. “Sula mwana va ku miguwa vaayo,” yelled on Bogere as he instructed Segawa to get off the ropes and attack Gallegos.

Rookie professional
Despite being a rookie professional, Segawa has since received overwhelming applause for his latest feat including media claims that MP have contacted him for a possible recruitment to the Las Vegas-based camp.
“That is not true,” Segawa told SCORE. “Actually that is news to my ears. After the fight, I was taken to a room and checked by Dr Albert Capanna just to make sure all is fine. I then went to my hotel to rest. I never even had a chance to talk to Bogere physically. The next morning I was out of Vegas without any contact from Mayweather camp.”
Segawa, who has since January this year relocated to Silver Spring - Maryland, USA from Netherlands says he is not in a hurry to switch camps. “Switching camp is not an idea I have in my mind right now. I am happy with my current promoter, I am really comfortable here,” added Segawa, who is promoted by a Ghanaian-American Napoleon Alabi under Lion’s Den World Entertainment.

Home of four
Alabi also promotes three more Ugandans; Super Lightweight Hamza ‘The Templer’ Sempewo, who resides in Miami, Florida, USA and Super Featherweights; Edward Kakembo and Charles Mulindwa.
The trio is however, yet to win a fight since relocating to USA from Uganda. Sempewo and Mulindwa have both had three fights in USA and not registered a single victory.
Kakembo, too, has lost his only and last two previous fights.
Segawa is back to training ahead of his coming fight in April.
“I don’t know the opponent yet, but I know that I will be back in the ring for my 10th professional fight in April. There hasn’t been any rest for me as I have already started training again,” said Kisenya-Kampala-bred pugilist.

Focus on Bogere
On the other side, Bogere who has since the start of the year returned to the World Boxing Council’s top 20 fighters list, is looking forward for a fight before Ramadan. “I believe I am in shape,” Bogere told SCORE.
“I want to have one more tune-up fight before the fasting period starts. Then get one more tune-up after the holy season and then may be my bosses will reward me with a title challenge bout.”
The immensely talented Bogere is currently ranked 19th by WBC.
