KAMPALA. The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Monitor Publications Ltd (MPL) have merged their annual University Career Fairs to produce more impressive fairs covering 11 universities across the country.

Speaking at the sealing of the deal yesterday, Mr Richard Byarugaba, the NSSF managing director, said six years since NSSF initiated its career fairs, the Fund has managed to collect Shs1billion from young savers. Mr Byarugaba said young people are interested in saving for their future but lack information on what they need to do.

“When we started the exercise, the idea was to catch the savers young because the average age for saving was 33 for boys and 32 for girls, but with the career fairs with universities, we have managed to save Shs.1 billion from the young people,” he said.

He said NSSF will meet the expenses of organizing the events, including the hire of venues and all the logistical and financial support for the key activities scheduled for Makerere University, MUBS, Kyambogo University, Uganda Christian University at Mukono, Ndejje University, Mbarara University, Gulu University, Uganda Martyrs University, and the Muteesa Royal University.

The fairs are to be conducted between March 13, and April 8.

Mr Tony Glencross, the MPL managing director, said the multi-media organization will use all its several platforms to publicise the career fairs because of the impact they have created since inception of the annual fair three years ago.

“Last year, we were overwhelmed by the turn out at Kyambogo University as the main hall was jam-packed, meaning there is vast thirst for knowledge on careers, and on how to generate extra money by learning from other entrepreneurs; and what we are doing is working together for a broader event,” he said.

Since 2014, MPL has held two career fairs at Kyambogo University and the last one at Mbarara University.

Ms Barbara Arimi, the NSSF head of marketing and communications, said their previous events have attracted sponsors such KCCA, Post Bank, Vodafone, DFCU Bank, ICEA, Lion, ACCA, CBA and Stanbic Bank.

During the fairs, renowned personalities with diverse expertise are selected and invited to talk to students to mentor them to transition from the school life which ends at university, and to usher them into the job market either as employees or entrepreneurs.
