At least 87 babies, including 35 boys and 52 girls, were born at four hospitals in Kampala. Mulago Referral Hospital registered 48 births, including two sets of twins. Nsambya Hospital recorded 25 with a set of twins whereas Kibuli Hospital registered 11 births. International Hospital Kampala registered only two births.

Dr Dorothy Mujabi Namulala, the officer in charge of Ward 5 at Mulago Hospital, said 12 babies were born by caesarean. She said 30 mothers had been discharged by yesterday as they were in good condition.

She, however, noted the hospital has few midwives yet it registers the highest number of pregnant mothers daily. At Nsambya Hospital, 22 mothers had normal deliveries whereas three had to undergo caesarean section.

All those who delivered at Kibuli Hospital and International Hospital Kampala had normal births and the babies were reported in good health. One of the parents, Mr Emmanuel Mulondo, said he was happy with the birth, calling it a blessing.

“I am very excited and as a Christian and a Roman Catholic, giving birth to a baby on Christmas Day is a special blessing,” Mr Mulondo told Daily Monitor yesterday. He was blessed with a baby girl.
