Kampala- Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura has requested Iran to train the Uganda Police Force in counter terrorism, which he said has increasingly become a security threat in the region.

“Iran is advanced in policing. They have modernised in science and are willing to share with us their expertise and train Uganda police, especially in counter terrorism and drug trafficking,” Gen Kale Kayihura told journalists at the police headquarters in Naguru on Wednesday.

“We are also looking at opening a police university and this is an area we need support,” he added.

Gen Kayihura was meeting the visiting Iran Commander-in-Chief of Police, Brig Gen Ismaeil Ahamdi Moghadam, who is in the country for a five-day visit.

Brig Moghadam, who is currently touring police facilities, said Iran would consider Uganda’s request and make an official communication soon.

Interpol Director Asan Kasingye said Brig Gen Moghadam’s visit is part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Presidents of Uganda and Iran.
In the MoU, Iran accepted to build a 500-bed hospital for the police, a poly clinic, train police officers and also build the Force’s capacity in forensic science and cybercrime management.
