'Rebel' Church of Uganda priest starts own church, names himself Bishop

Rev Jonathan Kyangasha, who was defrocked in December last year by the Bishop of Rwenzori Anglican Diocese Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo, has started his own church and named himself bishop.

On 19th December 2017, Rev. Kyangasha and four other priests were defrocked after the Diocesan Tribunal found them guilty of misconduct and misuse of church funds.

Bishop Kisembo cited sections of the Canon Law that empower diocesan tribunals to try priests and deacons on matters of ecclesiastical misconduct.

But the Rev. Kyangasha who was the chaplain at Canon Apollo Teachers College accuses members of the Diocesan Tribunal of unfairness, saying they did not follow the right procedure in handling their matter.

The aggrieved Rev Kyangasha has now started his own church under the Episcopal World Wide Church.
He urged the other defrocked priests to join him.

It’s becoming common in Uganda for priests to defy their mother churches and form their own churches.

Last year, Fr Jacinto Kibuuka, who quit the Roman Catholic Church was appointed as bishop of the Canada-based Evangelical Orthodox Church.
