Suspected woman killer arrested in Nakaseke shrine

KAMPALA- A man suspected to have killed a woman in Nyanama, off Entebbe Road, Rubaga Division in Kampala City, has been arrested in a shrine in Nakaseke District.
The suspect has been handed over to Nakaseke Police Station for interrogation.
Kampala Metropolitan Police commander, Mr Frank Mwesigwa confirmed the arrest. He identified the deceased as Maria Nabilawa.
“He [the suspect] has been arrested in a shrine where he had gone for cleansing. He is now recording a statement with our officers,” Mr Mwesigwa said.
It is alleged that the traditional healer tipped police officers who arrested him the suspect.
According to a Nakaseke District official, who didn’t want to be named, the suspect went to the shrine to be cleansed of the bad omen.
On Monday, police recovered a body of a woman in her 20s abandoned in a shrub. She was the 20th woman to be killed in Kampala Metropolitan Police Area in a recent surge of mysterious murders.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased and the suspect had a domestic wrangle over a piece of land they co- own in Matugga, Wakiso District.
The deceased feared to go back home and booked in Master Inn, a guest house in Namasuba, on Entebbe Road.
However, the boyfriend located her in the guest house where a fight reportedly ensued. The couple reportedly agreed to go home and settle the matter.
“The [couple] used two motorcycles to go home but along the way, they had another fight from a point where the boda boda operators dropped them. It is alleged that the suspect strangled the woman and dumped the body in Nyanama,” Mr Mwesigwa said.
Police found evidence at the scene od crime pointing to strangulation.
Since May this year, at least 30 suspects have been arrested over the death of women especially prostitutes.
Last week, 24 suspects were taken to court on charges of murder and terrorism before they were remanded to prison. Six other suspects are still detained at various police stations.
The Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura said the killings show a pattern and they are inspired by businessmen looking for blood for ritual sacrifices.
To prevent sex workers from being targeted, Gen Kayihura held a meeting with some of them and established spy networks to enable security track the killers.
Last week, the Speaker of Parliament, Ms Rebecca Kadaga tasked the ministers of Internal Affairs and Security to present a report on why the women are being targeted by criminals.
