A  delegation of ten  European ambassadors and heads of missions have begun a two day annual retreat in Gulu District.

The envoys who are led by EU ambassador Mr Kristian Schmidt arrived in the district on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, they toured Gulu Central Prison and St Mary’s Hospital Lacor before a meeting with religious leaders who subscribe to the Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative.

They will later visit Lukodi Massacre Site in Bungatira Sub-county where over 50 people were killed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.

According to Mr Schmidt, the purpose of the visit is to assess the social and economic situation in the region since the guns fell silent after decades of an armed conflict.

The ambassadors visiting the region are Mr Peter-Christof Blomeyer (German), Mr Mogens Pedersen(Denmark), Mr Donald Cronin (Ireland),  Mr Hugo Verbist (Belgiam),  Mr Domenico Fornara ( Italy),  Ms Stephanie Rivoal (France), Mr Henk Jan Bakker ( Netherlands), Per Lindgarde (Sweden) and  Guenter Engelits (Austria).
