Army explain photo circulating on social media
Police and UPDF have dismissed as fake news a photo of a mob beating up a soldier that has been doing rounds on social media with claims that he’s a Ugandan soldier.
The photo emerged Monday morning after an incident was reported in Nansana, Wakiso District where a taxi driver was hit on the head by a fellow motorist for allegedly scratching his car accidentally.
The ‘fake photo’, social media users claimed the soldier had been attacked by a mob after he pulled out a gun to shoot the taxi driver for allegedly scratching his car.
Other accounts claimed that the soldier had been beaten after he pulled a hoe out of his car and hacked the taxi driver.
However, UPDF spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire said no soldier had been involved in any accident in Nansana.
“No UPDF personnel or vehicle got involved in an accident in Nansana this morning as is circulating on social media. M/V Land Cruizer UAM 617D driven by civilian Gerard Kayondo is the one that was involved. Details are with Police,” Brig Karemire tweeted.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyegire corroborated Brig Karemire’s account and identified the taxi driver as Richard Seruga.
The police spokesperson said a scuffle ensued between Kayondo who was driving a Toyota Prado and the taxi driver following a minor accident.
“The scuffle allegedly ensued after the taxi driver accidentally scratched the parked Prado. The two drivers are said to have first engaged in a verbal exchange and I think things got out hand before the Prado guy opened his car, pulled out a hoe and hit the taxi driver on the head,” Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyegyire told our reporter.
Police say the fake photo was first posted on by one Western Togoland on August 21, 2017 purportedly showing citizens protesting.
