Army recruits 6,000 LDUs, halts exercise

Kampala. Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has suspended the recruitment of Local Defence Unit (LDU) for four months.
The UPDF Land Forces spokesperson, Maj Henry Obbo, said the exercise had been halted until the 6,436 recruits in the first and second phases complete their four-month training and get deployed in Kampala City, Wakiso and Mukono districts.
UPDF recruited 3,600 and 2,826 LDUs in the first and second phases respectively and they have since started their basic military training at Oliver Tambo Military Training School in Kaweweta, Nakaseke District.

“We do not have plans for the next recruitment now. We want to first deal with the ones already on training. We want to plan for their deployment and ensure they are monitored,” Maj Obbo said.
“We shall announce the next recruitment depending on the demand that will be available,” he added.
President Museveni ordered the recruitment of 24,000 LDUs in September following sporadic crime incidents involving high profile shootings, women killings and kidnaps.
