District police commander loses pistol to ‘thugs’

Mr Musa Kayongo, the Kyotera DPC

KYOTERA- Police are searching for a pistol that was reportedly stolen from the Kyotera District Police Commander, Mr Musa Kayongo.

Mr Kayongo says that while on night foot patrol in Kalisizo Town, on Thursday, on the eve of President Yoweri’s Museveni’s visit, two men dressed in army uniform, claiming to belong to the Special Forces Command Unit (SFC), asked him to give them the gun.

He reportedly handed over the pistol to the men because, traditionally, only members of SFC, a unit that protects the president, are supposed to have loaded guns near the head of State.

After realising that the men were not SFC soldiers, Mr Kayongo registered the case at Kalisizo Police Station.

However, a police officer at Kalisizo Police Station who preferred anonymity, to speak freely about his issue, claimed that Mr Kayongo lost his pistol to thugs who staged a road block at Bwasa Village on Masaka-Mutukula road.

Mr Lameck Kigozi, the southern regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident but gave no details to “avoid jeopardising” the ongoing investigations.

Armoured Brigade Spokesperson Capt. Flavia Terimulungi said they received information about the incident and they are investigating it.

There have been rising cases of guns being stolen from police officers in Kyotera and Rakai districts since 2016.
On December 31, 2016, thugs attacked Lance Cpl Kassim Okiror, attached to Uganda Revenue Authority at Mutukula border post and took his AK47 gun.

It was later recovered from three men who were hiding in Tanzania.

In September 2017, thugs raided Kasaali Prison and stole a gun, which was later recovered from a swamp.

On June 12, Mr Joseph Ssentongo, a Special Police Constable, attached to Rakai Police Station lost his gun. Thugs stole it from his house where he had left it to go and fetch water from a nearby spring. The gun is still missing.
In the same period, Mr Jimmy Nkuubi, a teacher at Green View Nursery and Primary School, handed over an SMG riffle to police officers at Luti Police Post in Kasaali Sub-county.
He was, however, detained.
