Kampala.

The new Makerere University guild president-elect, Ms Anna Adeke, has said her win in the recently concluded elections
is a reflection of the change in gender perceptions in the country.

Ms Adeke (FDC), who was the only female candidate in the race of eight, amassed more than 60 per cent of the total votes
cast at the 30 polling stations in the university. The first female guild president in half a decade collected 6,609
votes while her closest rival - NRM’s Boniface Okot - gathered 2,718 votes. Democratic Party’s Martin Segawa came third
with 1,313 votes.

The others were Musa Byamaka (Ind) with 105 votes, Ronald Wandera (CP) with 59 votes, Martin Twinamasiko 24 votes, Kokas
Okello (UPC) got 15 votes while Isaac Ssekkonge (Ind) got 13, votes followed the leading pack in that order. “My win is
a reflection of the changing gender attitudes in the country. I think women are starting to gain from what they have
been fighting for and it is good men are recognising this,” she said yesterday. “It is going to be challenging but at
the end of it all, students should expect to win.”

Critical assignment
She added that her first assignment would be to convince the university to reverse the 60 per cent tuition policy, as
well as ensure that the students’ results are pinned up on the notice boards within a month of a new semester.

“If one does not know their results, it becomes difficult for them to plan ahead because they would not know whether
they got retakes in the previous semesters and they do not know their progress, I would like that to be changed,” Ms
Adeke said amid a jubilating crowd that had gathered to congratulate her.
