I will deliver Ugandans from bondage - Besigye

Kapchorwa- A campaign slogan that FDC president Mugisha Muntu coined to project himself as the best choice for party presidential candidate has been taken up as a campaign tool by his opponent, Dr Kizza Besigye.

Maj Gen Muntu said last week at one of his campaign rallies that his predecessor, Dr Besigye, is Moses – the biblical prophet, who delivered Israelites from bondage in Egypt.

Gen Muntu equally tagged himself as Prophet Joshua, who took over from Moses to complete the task of taking the Isrealites to the Promised Land.

Although Gen Muntu’s allusion meant that Dr Besigye’s role is over, the retired colonel hit back saying his colleague doesn’t know the times.
“I have to deal with the pharaoh and we get out of Egypt then the Joshuas can take over the mantle,” Dr Besigye told an excited team of Sebei FDC regional delegates at Masha Hotel in Kapchorwa.

“If you (delegates) give me the flag next month, I will move forward and show President Museveni that it is not the usual old game. I will be a tough player because the people are behind me in ensuring that no rigging takes place,” he added, attracting applause.

Later, while addressing a rally at Kiprotich grounds, Dr Besigye asked residents to overcome fear and face the Pharaoh, who is using State power and resources to promote his personal and selfish interests at the expense of majority of Ugandans.

“The coming election is not just an ordinary election but a struggle to liberate the State from NRM and cause political reforms. Anyone who doesn’t have the objective of restructuring the State has no point for Ugandans,” he emphasised.
He claimed that NRM is continuously making Ugandans poor by underfunding the sector that employs 80 per cent of Ugandans - agriculture.
“You can smell the stinking poverty as you move around the country. People are still dying of jiggers, the health system is crippled and Universal Primary Education is burying our children.”

Dr Besigye was moved by the big crowd that turned up for his rally and noted that the region had changed since 2001 when he could hardly attract a crowd to address.

He challenged the Sabiny that NRM had not rewarded the region for overwhelming supporting it for the last 30years.

He pleaded with the people to boldly overcome fear instilled in them by the military regime by voting NRM out of power come 2016.

“All the actions I am talking about are non-violent. This is our land given to us by God. The people must re-own it,” Dr Besigye told the crowd.
