Ishma Mafabi is Eastern Youth MP

Jinja- Independent candidate Ishma Mafabi has been declared the winner of the Eastern Youth MP seat.

Mr Mafabi, 24, a law student at the Islamic University in Uganda - Mbale campus, defeated five other candidates, including NRM’s Dorothy Okware in the election held at YMCA premises in Jinja Town on Thursday.

Ms Okware defeated Mr Mafabi during the NRM party primaries held at Namboole in Kampala but the latter decided to stand as an Independent candidate.

He had earlier on been barred from contesting by the Electoral Commission on allegations that his name was missing on the national voters’ register but he petitioned court, which stopped the election until the petition was disposed of.
Voting started on Thursday and spilled over to Friday when the final results were declared, giving Mr Mafabi victory with 752 votes against Ms Okware’s 428 votes.

Mr Mafabi was declared winner by Mr Apollo Musinguzi, the Busoga region election officer. “From the results of the polls conducted here at YMCA, Mr Mafabi has obtained the largest number of votes. I therefore declare him the winner,” Mr Musinguzi announced at the tally centre.

The other contestants were Forum for Democratic Change candidate Mr Iddi Ouma; Ms Masitula Namatovu, Mr Brayan Amonyo and Mr Mabale Lumonyo, (all Independents).
