What you need to know:

Prince. Prince Richard Ssemakookiro was yesterday officially introduced to the public.

Wakiso.

It was excitement and jubilation in Wakiso District yesterday as Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga officially introduced to the public Prince Richard Ssemakookiro, the second son of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.

In January 2012, then Katikkiro of Buganda John Baptist Walusimbi announced the news of the birth of Prince Ssemakookiro in a statement issued by the office of the Katikkiro.
According to the statement, the prince was born in July 2011 and his mother is from the Nsenene (grasshopper) clan.

Other than Prince Ssemakookiro’s picture that was released to the public officially then, this is the first time he made public appearances and was introduced to Kabaka’s subjects drawing excitement from the crowd.

At this point, the Kabaka just looked on and smiled away as Mr Mayiga’s speech was interrupted for about five minutes.
People struggled to catch a glimpse of the prince as others praised the Kabaka for “rejuvenating the Buganda Kingdom by showing us your successor,”.

After the exhilaration calmed down, Mr Mayiga explained the gesture was to end speculation about Ssemakookiro’s identity. This was at yesterday’s Buganda Kingdom celebrations to mark community service (bulungi bwansi) at Busiro County headquarters in Wakiso District.

The Kabaka in his speech observed that the biggest weakness in Uganda is lack of principles and truth by people and trying to change history for selfish gains.
He thanked all schools which participated in community service, stressing that the commitment of schools in volunteerism gives hope for a better generation.

Kabaka urged people to consider community service as the country prepares to vote leaders in 2016.

He also launched four plays titled; “Kyoto, Mbuga, Okobuntu and Binojo” aimed at educating the public about clans, Buganda leadership set up, customs and discipline, and hard work, respectively.

Mayiga called on people to work hard as the Kabaka braved the heavy dust and hot sun to visit his people.
Several officials including religious leaders, MPs and Buganda officials attended the function.

The Kabaka also launched a water channel that will connect the Katabi Sub-county in Entebbe to Sissa Sub –county in Wakiso District. The Kabaka said the river channel will help to ease transport between the two sub counties.

“Before, my people have been travelling a long distance from Katabi Sub-county in Entebbe to Sisa Sub- county for between 25-30 miles but it is through the community service initiative by Buganda Kingdom and people’s ideas that we came up with such a wonderful development,” said the Kabaka.

He noted that the channel will shorten the distance for businessmen who have been selling perishables foodstuff and also open up more business opportunities.
