Police in Kaberamaido District are hunting for the town council chairperson who allegedly set ablaze his colleague’s house after he accused him of sending love messages to his wife.
According to police, Mr David Einyu, the town council chairperson, was seen driving a van allocated to the Town Clerk’s office on Thursday night.

Mr Einyu indicated he was travelling to his village hours before the incident.
Mr Godfrey Abigaba, the district police commander, told Daily Monitor in an interview yesterday that residents who dashed to the scene of crime saw Mr Einyu jump into the van after torching Mr Simon Okello’s house.

Engine fails
“As locals cornered him, he failed to start the car, prompting him to run and he abandoned the car at the scene of crime,” Mr Abigaba said.
The residents also recovered a burnt phone at the crime scene allegedly belonging to Mr Einyu.
At that time, Mr Okello and his wife were reportedly away attending to their sick mother who was admitted to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.
Mr Abigaba added that they have since arrested the Town Clerk, Mr Peter Erisu, whose office car was abandoned at the scene of crime.
“He should tell us where the town council chairperson is and secondly, he could be having more information on what might have prompted Mr Einyu to torch the houses belonging to Simon Okello,” Mr Abigaba said.

Mr Edmond Ochaloi, Mr Okello’s brother, told Daily Monitor in an interview that he saw Mr Einyu trying to escape from the crime scene minutes after his brother’s house caught fire.
“When I saw fire blazing, I jumped out. I then rushed to where the town council van was parked a few meters away, only to see the mayor struggling to start the van, when the van failed to start, I made an alarm and he took off under the cover of night,” Mr Ochaloi said.
