KAMPALA. Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has lashed out at the Kampala Minister, Beti Olive Kamya and a section of NRM MPs whom he accused of tinkering with the Constitution by supporting the removal of Presidential age limit.

While addressing Journalists at his office, Mr Lukwago wondered why Ms Kamya and the NRM MPs are ‘defiling’ the Constitution yet they pledged to defend it while they were taking oath.

“The Constitution is the fundamental law of the land and these same MPs have taken an oath to defend it under Article 79. It’s ironical that the same people want to cause mayhem in the country by supporting Mr Museveni to contest again for presidency yet he is no longer eligible as the law provides. We shall vehemently defend the constitution against all sorts of maneuvers.” Mr Lukwago said.

Mr Lukwago was responding to a section of NRM MPs who voted on Tuesday to table a Constitutional amendment Bill to amend Article 102(b) and scrap the presidential age limit.
He explained that MPs are setting the country ablaze by supporting a controversial issue yet the country is faced with many challenges which urgently need their intervention.

He also alleged that Ms Kamya had been given money to compromise all city leaders and residents so that they could support the removal of age limit, citing the incident on Tuesday where some taxi operators marched through the city centre, pledging to support the removal of the Presidential age limit.
“We want to warn Kamya that Kampala won’t be used as a launch pad for Mr Museveni’s maneuvers. I want to assure Kamya that we won’t give you room to play with our future and stability because we are ready to counter all your plans,” he said.

When contacted, Ms Kamya said she couldn’t respond to Mr Lukwago’s allegations, adding that “I am tired of responding to Lukwago every time. Let him say whatever he wants.”
Ever since she was appointed Minister, Ms Kamya has been in a bitter relationship with Mr Lukwago.
Mr Lukwago, who is a staunch opposition politician and a critic of President Museveni, accuses Kamya of plotting to usurp his powers as the political head of the city.
