Lukwago silent on plans by councillors to unseat him

What you need to know:

“Please, would you check with the Sunday Vision for what you want? What else do you want me to comment on? I have no comment for that.”

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago had by yesterday chosen to remain silent over plans by city councillors to remove him from office.

Last week, a group of councillors petitioned the Minister for Kampala, Mr Frank Tumwebaze, listing 10 reasons for their dissatisfaction with the conduct of Mr Lukwago since his election.
They accused him, among others, of attacking the technical wing and consistently abusing the law that governs the city.

When contacted over the matter, the Lord Mayor said: “Please, would you check with the Sunday Vision for what you want? What else do you want me to comment? I have no comment for that.”

In the petition, the councillors also demanded that Mr Lukwago explains to Kampala residents the laws he invoked to suspend council meetings without consulting the supreme governing authority led by the executive director, Ms Jennifer Musisi.

Meanwhile, LC3 and LC5 division councillors have not been paid their allowances for a number of months.

Mr Elijah Owobusingye, the Makindye East councillor, in a telephone interview with the Daily Monitor yesterday, blamed the Lord Mayor’s office for reluctance to address the ever increasing problems at City Hall.

“Why is he adamant to call a crisis meeting when all developmental works are stalled?” Mr Owobusingye said.
“He (Mr Lukwago) and all those councillors were elected to serve the electorates, not to out muscle one another as it appears today,” he added.
