Magistrate visits Luzira prison

Nakawa Court Chief Magistrate James Ereemye has has paid a visit to jailed Forum for Democratic Change former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye in Luzira prison where he’s being held over treason charges.
Eremye on June 29 offered to visit the four time challenger of president Yoweri Museveni after Dr Besigye’s continuous pleas to the court whenever he is produced of how his rights are being violated in prison.

The magistrate’s visit is to ascertain what exactly is happening in the largest government prison where the opposition leader and other inmates are being held.
“On the issue of violation of rights in prison, it’s high time under the umbrella of DCC [District Chain-Linked Committees] that I should visit you in Luzira prison so that we discuss and see how and why these concerns keep on coming up so that we can come up with solutions in that regard,” Magistrate Ereemye then assured Dr Besigye who was very attentive in the dock.

However, Mr Ereemye who is in meeting with prison officials now says he is not in Luzira to see Dr Besigye but on a routine DCC visit of prisons.
His team has Oc CID Kira Road Police Station, DPC Jinja road police station, Nakawa Court Resident State Attorney.

Ereemye says he did not vow to visit Luzira Prison to see Dr Besigye.
“I Only told him I will be on a routine visit of the prison and will check some of the issues he raises,” says Ereemye.

Also at Luzira to visit Dr Besigye is the Kampala City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kira municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda.
