KAMPALA. Makerere and Busitema universities yesterday released the names of some 1,628 students they have admitted for undergraduate studies on government sponsorship.
Makerere, the country’s oldest and largest, admitted 1,529 students or 38 per cent of the 4000 government sponsored students at the eight public universities for courses at both the main campus and its affiliate Makerere University Business School (Mubs).
Busitema University, in the eastern Tororo District, on the other hand has admitted only 99 students on government sponsorship.
The Makerere admissions exclude students who applied for Bachelor of Law course who will have to pass the pre-entry examination first.
Mr Charles Ssentongo, the acting deputy registrar in charge of undergraduate admissions at Makerere, told Daily Monitor that the list for law students is expected to be released next week.
He also revealed that the university will run media adverts mid- next month inviting applications for self-paying students, otherwise called the private sponsorship scheme, for 2017/2018 academic year which begins in August.
“Private-sponsored students will only be required to apply after the university has advertised in the media. The university will then sit and decide on the cut-off points for private students depending on the performance of students who will apply,” Mr Ssentongo said.

For instance, Makerere reduced the points for admission to study Bachelor of Pharmacy on government sponsorship from 52.9 in 2015/2016 academic years to 40.9; Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is at 42.9, down from 52.7 the previous year while Bachelor of Dental Surgery from to 42.1 from 51.6.
Relatedly, Busitema has also lowered the cut-off points of all its courses by one to two points.
