Man remanded over attacking lawyer with acid
KAMPALA.
Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has remanded a man to Luzira prison over attacking a lawyer, Mr David Tebusweke Mayinja, with acid.
The suspect Isha Nuhu a driver and resident of Janda-Namugongo in Kira Municipality-Wakiso district is charged over conspiracy to murder and attempting to commit a felony by pouring acid on people.
Appearing in a session presided over by Grade One Magistrate, Charles Yeteise, the accused person Nuhu denied the charges.
He is charged a alongside one Hajji Kaboggoza Mutwalibu the key suspect who was not present before court. The prosecutor Ms Emily Ninsiima informed court that he (Mutwalibu) secured a police bond when the file was sanctioned by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Presiding Yeteise issued a warrant of arrest to Hajji Mutwalibu after criticizing the state prosecutor for having allowed the registration of a file before court, when all the suspects are not in police custody.
The magistrate cautioned the state not to repeat such acts asserting that they are only intended to waste court’s time and valuable state resources.
Court adjourned the matter to March 16 for mention as investigations continue.
Prosecution contends that in February between Kampala City and Wakiso district, Nuhu, Hajji Mutwalibu and others still at large conspired to kill Mayinja who doubles as a lawyer when they attacked him with acid.
According to Mr Mayinja an outspoken politician and the Democratic Party (DP) Secretary for Mpigi district claims his trouble stems from his representing an 82-year old client who sued the Hajji Mutwalibu of fraudulently taking over his land located in Kyaliwajjala Namugongo measuring 25acres. The land case is ongoing before the Land Division of the High Court.
During the acid attack the victim and his wife were driving in their Ipsum vehicle heading to their home in Nansana, Wakiso district. His wife got injuries on the face while Mayinja was injured on the chest.
This is the second time this lawyer Mayinja is attacked with acid. In 2009 still he was attacked with acid and he sustained with grave injuries.
