Museveni appoints 14 new judges

KAMPALA. President Museveni has appointed 14 judges to the Court of Appeal and the High Court respectively in a bid to fill the existing gaps in the courts of judicature.

According to the February 7 notice from the clerk of Parliament to the MPs who sit on the appointments committee, the President has appointed four justices to the Court of Appeal and ten to the High Court.
Those appointed to the Court of Appeal include; Justice Christopher Madrama, Justice Stephen Musota, Justice Percy Tuhaise and Justice Ezekiel Muhanguzi who recently retired as a High Court judge upon clocking 65 years of age.

Those appointed to the High Court Bench include; Chief Registrar, Mr Paul Gadenya, Chief Magistrate Joyce Kavuma, deputy registrars; Olive Kazaarwe Mukwaya, Alex Ajiji, Tadeo Asiimwe and Emmanuel Baguma.
Others to the High Court are; High Court advocate Musa Sekaana, Richard Wabwire, state attorney, Ms Jane Abodo, and Ms Cornelia Sabiiti, the former executive director of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA).

“Rt Hon. Speaker of Parliament received a communication from H.E, the President of the Republic of Uganda recommending the appointment of the under listed officers as judges of the Court of Appeal and the High Court respectively,” read in part the notice by the Clerk to Parliament

The notice further read: “The purpose of this letter is to invite you for a meeting to interact and consider the approval of the above Presidential nominees. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 14th February and 15th Thursday, 2018 at 9:30am in the South Committee room.”

The President’s appointments is in response to the persistent complaints by the Judiciary about shortages of judges to tackle the staggering case backlog.
