Over 30 families of survivors and the victims have over the years been petitioning the President asking for compensation.

Speaking at Rubindi Boys Primary School in Rubindi Sub-county in Mbarara District on Tuesday, Mr Museveni asked politicians not to turn into enemies of their opponents, saying God will abandon them.

He was speaking in reference to the cutting down of banana plantations of supporters of incumbent area Member of Parliament Yaguma Wilberforce after he defeated Mr Urban Tibamanya, Mr Didas Tabaaro and Ms Margaret Rwebyambu in the NRM primaries.

“I have heard that people cut plantations of their colleagues; now you are going to bring yourself problems. Someone big up there is watching. He is recording, it is such acts that led to the collapse of UPC government,” Mr Museveni said.

In Ibanda North, several acres of banana planation belonging to NRM flag bearer Capt Guma Gumisiriza and his three supporters were also cut down last week. Capt Guma is competing with incumbent Xavier Kyooma who is running on independent ticket.

Mr Museveni said such cruel acts do not affect only the targeted political opponents but also their children and the community. Mr Museveni said he has never been an enemy of anyone in the wars he has fought and it is the reason he has been successful in his political endeavours.

“The wars that I have gone through successfully is not because of my individual ability and strength but it is God who is behind me,” he said.

He added: “I think the reason is because he knows I am not an enemy; I am not an enemy to anyone. When you attack me, I shoot you (in self-defense), if you don’t die I treat you (to heal). I don’t shoot you because I hate you, I am defending myself; If God takes you, I take care of your orphans.”

Mr Museveni promised to elevate Rubindi Health Centre III to health centre IV, rehabilitate Rubidi Boys Primary School and extend power to trading centres in the constituency.

He added that Kashwa-Ruhumba road in the neigbouring Kashongi Constituency in Kiruhura District would be tarmacked. The constituency will also get water and electricity.
