Police arrest 46 youth in Bobi Wine night protests

LUWEERO- About 46 youth spent the night behind bars at Luweero Central Police Station for allegedly throwing stones and obstructing traffic on the Gulu-Kampala Highway on Monday evening. The youth were rounded up by Riot Police officers who were backed by UPDF soldiers in a joint operation.
The stone-throwing youth engaged security operatives in running fights at different sections of the Kampala- Gulu highway as jubilant residents lined the highway to catch a glimpse of bailed politicians including Kyadondo East MP, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi a.k.a Bobi Wine from Gulu to Kampala City.
Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Paul Kangave said on Tuesday that the 46 youth are among suspected people, still at large, who pelted stones at security officers, burnt old car tires and tried to interfere with the normal traffic flow on the Kampala-Gulu highway on Monday.
“The youth pelted stones and burnt old car tires even after the convoy transporting the bailed out politicians had passed through Luweero Town,” he said. “They tried to interfere with the normal traffic flow on the Gulu- Kampala highway,” Mr Kangave said.
Luweero District Police Commander, Mr Benson Byaruhanga said police fired teargas and live bullets to quell the rioting youth.
“Police will conduct a screening exercise to have those implicated in the Monday night violent acts charged with inciting violence and obstructing the smooth flow of traffic,” Mr Kangave said.
